Past Policies

Redistributing Tax Revenue
2019
There are five counties who have average incomes that are greater than the state average income. These five counties are Orange, Wake, Mecklenburg, Forsyth, and Durham counties. The state should redistribute 1% of these counties’ tax revenue to the remainder of the state, which would allow local governments to invest in programs that would improve their average standard of living. This would allow rural counties to reduce educational, health, and income inequalities.

Ineffective Standardized Tests
2018
North Carolina’s educational system currently relies on a series of standardized tests in order to measure student success as well as school and teacher quality. Moving forward, the state legislature should pivot toward a more comprehensive and fluid form of evaluation that includes stealth assessments and inspections. This new model will reduce undue stress placed on students, allow teachers greater freedom in teaching methods, and to replace the emphasis on studying with a focus on the joy of learning.

Implementing Rooftop Solar Panels in UNC Dorms
2020
To reduce the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s (UNC) carbon emissions, most of which are generated by student energy use (Kupatt, Scandella, and Waters 2008), the UNC Senate should incorporate the addition of rooftop solar panels in plans to renovate student dormitories.

Legalizing Insect-Based Feed
2018
To mitigate the effects of climate change on food production and meet food demands, insect-based feed for animal agriculture must be legalized so it can replace plant-based feed which accounts for the majority of the agricultural industry’s resource consumption.

Providing On-Campus Mental Health Professionals for UNC Students
2019
UNC's lack of on-campus mental health professionals forces students to seek off-campus services, which often aren’t affordable or easily accessible. UNC should provide on-campus access to licensed therapists and psychiatrists to enable students to properly address their mental health issues.

The Assumption of Consent for Organ Donation Post-Mortem in North Carolina
2018
North Carolina should assume the consent for organ donation post-mortem for its residents in order to decrease the percentage of North Carolina’s population that suffers and/or dies from the inability to receive an organ transplant, thus improving the wellbeing of state’s residents and economy.
